OBITUARY

Prof. Deva Prasad Phukan Sir is no more with us!

Prof. Deva Prasad Phukan, former Head of Department of Pharmacology, Gauhati Medical College is no more with us. He breathed his last at around   3 p.m. on 14 February at his East Dighali Pukhuripar residence.

Prof. Phukan was not keeping well for last couple of months for which he could not attend the 'felicitation of our revered teachers' program on 11 December 2010 on the occasion of the GGJAM-2010.

Prof. Phukan was amongst the first batch alumni of Assam Medical College. After completion of his MBBS course in 1952 he completed his post-graduation in pharmacology (MD) from the prestigious King George Medical College, Lucknow in 1962 and joined the Gauhati Medical College as an assistant professor of Pharmacology. He was holding the post of Professor and HOD since 1968 till his retirement in the year 1986. Later on Prof. Phukan had joined the Regional Medical College, Imphal as professor and HOD in 1988.

A pioneer in writing articles on scientific and medical topics, Prof. Phukan was at ease writing in both English as well as in Assamese. Many such articles have been published in newspapers and periodicals of repute like the AssamTribune, Dainik Asom, The Sentinel, Asom Bani, Natun Asomiya, Awahan etc. Amongst my most prized possessions I have a number of old issues of journals of GMC where I find writings of Prof. Phukan. He had authoured an article titled "Chemotherapy of malignant diseases" in the 13th edition of GMC journal (1979-1981) of which I was also a member of the editorial board.

I remember vividly how popular Phukan Sir was during our GMC days! I even on one occasion carried a big stray dog from Panbazar to the Narakachal hill top GMC college building in our college bus just to oblige him.

We (the members of GMCAA executive council) had planned to visit him at his residence to hand over the citation and mementos personally; but destiny had other plans and denied us the opportunity of showing our last respects and regards to our revered and beloved teacher.

His "Punya Adya Shraddha" falls on the 26 February Saturday which shall be solemnized at his East Dighali Pukhuripar residence.

On behalf of GMCAA, I request all of our members, GMC fraternity, and well-wishers to pray to ALMIGHTY for eternal peace of Phukan Sir's Soul.
