OBITUARY : Dr. Hemanta Kumar Talukdar

Sad news was waiting for me at around last midnight. It was a telephone call that Hemanta is no more. He has breathed his last on 24 May 2013 morning in the ICU of GMCH, where he was under treatment for quite some time.

A brilliant student of batch 1974 of GMC, he had the distinction of scoring highest mark in ENT and later on, he had completed his PG in ENT from GMC and had joined in the medical college services.

An extremely popular and friendly to his classmates and friend circles, he was very keen on music too. I still remember Hemanta along with Dr. Indrajit Sharma, Dr. Imdad Ullah, and others composed a real Qawwali which was adjusted as the best in one of our college anniversary cultural competitions...mein peeta nahih, par mujhe peelaya gaya hein.. still haunts me.

In late seventies when we were composing a theme song for "Kamarupa Cultural Organization", a cultural organizations of medicos of GMC, Hemanta was helping and guiding us in all possible ways.

He was also a part of the class cricket and chorus team always.

When I was warden at hostel-1 in early eighties, I was staying in room no. 120 alone; the room was like a club house for all the boarders. Whenever a PG student or doctor is unable to manage a seat in doctors' hostel, he used to stay with me till he gets a seat of his own. Hemanta was my room-mate for quite some time and we have developed a close bond between us. I remember many memorable incidents with him. He was a simple and helpful soul, always energetic, a dedicated team member of ours.

For last a few years I was not in close contact with him as he was away from Guwahati, so am I.

I have received the news of his demise quite late and by the time his cremation was over.

The fact that I was unable to meet him for the last time, shall always haunt me. I did not cry, because I couldn't; I did not shed tear too. But my heart was so heavy with pain, agony and sadness that I was stunned.

Be in eternal peace, my beloved friend! What more I can say for you today!

Destiny writes something against our wish and will; always!

But life is like that. Destiny does not care for anything, destiny does not care for anybody too.
